Virtual Machines

I had been hearing about virtualization and virtual servers. This is a bit scary for one who has fear of things new which I am. However, the need to gain a presence on the Internet had become intolerably great and I was prodded by my inner demons to try Virtual Private Servers which I did last January.

As it turned out, VPS Hosting is not so scary after all and I was able to get my VPS working with Wordpress running in the multiuser mode. This experience emboldened me to try an easy way to getting my feet wet in virtualization. The obvious choice is Vmware, because I have a friend who has talked about it in glowing terms. So, I did what I usually do when confronted by the need to learn, I googled "virtualization" and "vmware" and found out that a vmware player allowed one to run virtual machine appliances which were offered free.

Installing Vmware player on a Windows XP host was a snap. The next problem was to find a suitable appliance to try out. There were a number of available appliance on the Vmware Appliance marketplayce and I selected one which had a multiuser version of Wordpress. This meant that the problem of configuring Apache, Php, Mysql on Linux has been taken away and all you needed to do is point your browser to your vm appliance and the thing brought me to the Wordpress Website.

This is where I hit a bit of a snag. I did not know what to do with my appliance and when I tried to bring up WordpressMU on my browser again, I was redirected to another site which was not so cool.

This brought me to conclude that while it is easy to install virtual appliances, becoming productive is a whole different ball game.
